On
the scrapheap at 21? The Dukinfield IT expert turned down for
1,500 jobs
A job hunter who was turned down for more than 1,500
vacancies has finally found work – after we revealed his
plight. Daniel Smith feared he was on the scrapheap at 21
after trying without success to secure employment for more
than two years. But he has now received the news he was hoping
for – a job offer from a Manchester hotel after bosses read
his story.
Daniel got a phone call inviting him for an interview
yesterday afternoon at Travelodge on Great Ducie Street in the
city centre – and within an hour he had been offered a job. He
is set to start on Saturday – initially working in the bar for
16 hours a week. But managers told him he could be trained up
for other roles, which could provide full-time employment.
Daniel said: "It’s really good news – it has been a long time
coming but it happened so quickly after we ran the story. I
got the phone call and then it all spiralled from there.

a bar job. "My interview went well. They liked me and
said they admired my determination and eagerness to find a job
so they were willing to take me on.
"I’ve had some experience of bar work so I’m hoping it
won’t take me long to learn the ropes. They mentioned I could
potentially do some reception work so it will give me chance
to gain experience in different areas and get on the
employment ladder. I’m delighted."
Daniel, from Dukinfield, sailed through a college IT course
at Ashton Sixth Form College in 2009 and started looking for
work – applying for an average of two jobs a day for more than
two years. The article prompted scores of website users to
post messages of support for Daniel, including job advice.
"I had a lot of comments about my story from friends and
people who had read it," Daniel added.
"Hopefully, it has shown how big the problem is and sends a
message to the government that more needs to be done to help
people like me."
